This \u201dNatural Organic Matter\u201d (NOM) plays a vital role in water usage and we still know very little about it!<\/h3>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Why do we know so little about NOM?<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>NOM&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"wb_IntroBulletedList\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"item\">&#8230; cannot be concentrated without beeing destroyed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"item\">&#8230; is present in very small concentrations only.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"item\">&#8230; is too hydrophilic to be isolated from water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"item\">&#8230; has no specific chemical functionalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>In this situation, what can be done?<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Inject the water sample directly into a semipreparative column filled with a hydrophilic polymer containing pores for separation according to speed of diffusion and use a mild buffer at neutral pH as mobile phase.<\/li>\n<li>Use several detectors for analysis including a DOC-detector for quantification.<\/li>\n<li>Use custom-made intelligent software for data processing.<\/li>\n<li>Have an experienced person for data interpretation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This approach is called \u201dLC-OCD\u201d (Liquid Chromatography &#8211; Organic Carbon Detection).<br \/>\nDOC-Labor Dr. Huber has developed this technique and is currently the only service laboratory offering this worldwide to research and industry.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The benefit of LC-OCD?<\/h4>\n<p>NOM is separated into 6 known sub-fractions which give meaningful results for most questions related to water treatment.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Position of LC-OCD in the family of analytical tools for characterisation of NOM<\/h4>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-443 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doc-labor.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Position-new.png?resize=604%2C400\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doc-labor.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Position-new.png?w=1227 1227w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doc-labor.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Position-new.png?resize=300%2C199 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doc-labor.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Position-new.png?resize=768%2C508 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doc-labor.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Position-new.png?resize=1024%2C678 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"> <div class=\"col-md-8\">\nWhen we look at analytical tools for the analysis of NOM we can choose techniques with a high compound identification potential, like GC-MS, or high mass balancing potential, like TOC.<\/p>\n<p>Many researchers use both strategies and have to realise that a large part of DOC remains unidentified.<\/p>\n<p>LC-OCD was developed to fill this analytical \u201dgap\u201d, at least to some extent.
